| Abstract | Living examples of the ways that culture and ecology can co-exist to support communities are found in temple forests and sacred groves in India. Under their management by faith and tradition, they play the roles of collective resource, which offer fodder, forest produce, clean water, and fertile soil and also generate income through pilgrimage, tourism, and ecosystem services. The case studies of Meghalaya, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Kerala and Uttarakhand emphasize their contribution to reduce household expenditures, biodiversity protection and to sustain local economies. The replacement of animal sacrifice by the symbolic ones also shows the way traditions change to minimize the costs and save the resources. These results demonstrate temple forests as not only a spiritual realm but an operational demonstration of low-cost and community-based conservation with important lessons to all current sustainability and rural development policy. |
