Agentic AI in Small Business: Autonomy, Efficiency, and the Automation of Entrepreneurship Reconsidered

| Abstract | Agentic artificial intelligence (AI) describes autonomous systems that can plan, decide, and execute tasks with little human intervention. Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), often operating with lean staff and tight budgets, stand to gain from these tools—but they also carry new forms of risk. This paper examines how SMBs can adopt agentic AI responsibly, weighing operational benefits against governance challenges. It is a conceptual, exploratory framework that combines a thematic literature review with secondary case analysis to organize early evidence and emerging practice. The core message is twofold: agentic AI can lift efficiency, productivity, and strategic foresight, yet it also raises concerns around bias, opacity, and security. To make adoption safer and more practical, the paper proposes simple, low-overhead tools—decision logs, bias checks, and streamlined compliance steps. The main contribution is a governance-informed adoption model designed for SMB realities, offering a path to integrate agentic AI without enterprise-level resources. |
