Hospital Decarbonization and Sustainable Practices: A Case Study Approach

Author(s) Mr. Saifi Zama
Country India
Abstract The healthcare sector is a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, with hospitals alone accounting for nearly 5% of the total. This paper presents a case study of Tata Main Hospital (TMH), Jamshedpur, showcasing its initiatives in decarbonisation and sustainable waste management. TMH has adopted multiple measures, including outsourcing all biomedical waste to centralized treatment facilities, implementing energy-efficient infrastructure, promoting green mobility, encouraging behavioral energy conservation, and advancing water sustainability through reuse of treated water and rainwater harvesting. These initiatives are consistent with KPMG’s (2024) findings, which suggest that integrated sustainability strategies can reduce healthcare-related carbon emissions by 10–15% [1]. The case study highlights both the practicality and the positive impact of adopting sustainable practices within a hospital environment.
