Integrated Approach to Creating Ceramic Glazes and Stoneware Clay Bodies

Author(s) Mr. Karan Bhola
Country India
Abstract This research presents a systematic and experimental study on the integrated development of ceramic glazes and stoneware clay bodies specifically optimized for Cone 8 (1260°C) firing. Combining theoretical understanding with practical experimentation, the study explores the formulation, testing, and refinement of both glaze and clay body recipes through controlled material selection, firing trials, and documentation. Emphasis is placed on understanding the chemistry and behavior of materials in relation to their functions as glass formers, stabilizers, and fluxes within glazes, as well as their structural and aesthetic roles within clay bodies. The research further examines substitute materials and standardized testing methods for both glazes and clay bodies, providing a reliable framework for consistent and reproducible results. This integrated approach aims to assist ceramists, sculptors, and students in achieving durable, functional, and visually compelling outcomes in medium-fire ceramics.
