Effects of Zambian Curriculum Framework on Promotion of Agricultural Science: a Study of Selected Secondary Schools in Chinsali

Author(s) Mr. Arthur Mwamba Milandile, Mr. Leonard Sakakombe
Country Zambia
Abstract The study assessed the impact of Zambia’s 2013 revised curriculum on promoting Agricultural Science, a practical subject within the vocational career pathway, in selected secondary schools in Chinsali District, Muchinga Province. The research aimed to evaluate whether measures implemented by the government and stakeholders achieved the intended goal of promoting vocational subjects and to determine if these efforts supported or undermined Agricultural Science in schools. Conducted across twelve secondary schools with 60 participants, the study employed a descriptive survey design, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Participants were selected using stratified random sampling for teachers of vocational subjects and purposive sampling for head teachers, District Education Board members, and provincial education officials. Data were analyzed through thematic analysis and statistical methods using SPSS version 21.0. Findings revealed that the 2013 curriculum failed to promote Agricultural Science due to low subject selection and declining student enrollment, attributed to teacher shortages, school locations, and administrators’ discretionary subject choices. The study recommends continuous monitoring of career pathway implementation to prevent administrators from prioritizing personal preferences, recruiting more Agricultural Science teachers to address staffing shortages, and collaborating with stakeholders to provide practical learning materials.
