Abstract Background: Stress, anxiety, and depression are among the most prevalent mental health issues that people of all ages face globally. These illnesses have a detrimental effect on day-to-day functioning, quality of life, and overall health. Despite their effectiveness, traditional interventions like psychotherapy and medication have drawbacks, such as poor adherence, stigma, and side effects, which emphasize the need for non-pharmacological and complementary approaches. A mind-body relaxation method called guided imagery (GI) uses mental visualization to enhance psychological well-being, lower stress levels, and encourage tranquillity.
Methods: The narrative review synthesizes current evidence from randomized controlled trials to explore the effectiveness of guided imagery in reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. Databases including PubMed, Google Scholar, and One Nation One Subscription were searched for relevant literature, and studies meeting predefined inclusion criteria were included.
Results: Numerous RCTs have shown that guided imagery dramatically lowers stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms in a variety of demographics. Interventions delivered through audio recordings, live guidance, or virtual reality promote relaxation, emotional regulation, and coping skills, while also improving sleep quality and overall well-being.
Conclusion: The body of research points to guided imagery as a non-invasive, culturally sensitive, and safe method that can be used clinically as a supplement to traditional therapies for depression, anxiety, and stress.
