| Abstract | Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is a common healthcare-associated infection that compromises patient safety. Nurses play a critical role in urinary catheter maintenance and infection prevention. This study examined the effectiveness of a multimodal intervention on nurses’ knowledge and practice of urinary catheter maintenance for CAUTI prevention. A pre-experimental study was conducted among 109 nurses in a South Indian tertiary hospital, with 278 catheter care observations (139 pre- and 139 post-intervention). The intervention included an educational session, booklets, CAUTI bundle checklists, and pint measures. Data were collected using a validated knowledge questionnaire and observational checklist. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 17.0. Most of the participants were females (93.6%) aged between 20–30 years; 60.6% were married, 80.7% were diploma holders, and 79.8% had no prior CAUTI education. Before the intervention, none of them demonstrated adequate knowledge of CAUTI, which improved to 15% afterward. Adequate practice rose from 38% pre-intervention to 85% post-intervention. The multimodal intervention effectively improved nurses’ knowledge and practice regarding urinary catheter maintenance, highlighting its potential to strengthen CAUTI prevention strategies. |
