Abstract Background: Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) consists of three methods, which include non-invasive intermittent positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV), non-invasive continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) application via non-invasive interface, and application of negative pressure to the airways using iron lung or body ventilators.1 The long-term use of NIV presents a number of difficulties, such as air leaks, vomiting, pneumothorax, pneumonia, ulcer over the nose bridge, dry mouth and nose, aerophagia, and gastrointestinal distention.2 A patient's clinical state, educational needs, staff confidence in using the machine, selection and management of the best interface available to prevent complications, nutritional assessment and oxygenation all contribute to a positive outcome from NIV respiratory support. 3
Materials and methods: The quantitative approach was adopted for the study and the research design selected for the study was pre-experimental one group pretest posttest design. Non probability purposive sampling technique was used in the study. Sample size was 30 and the samples who satisfied the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected consecutively. Informed consent was obtained from the participants who were willing to participate in the study. The investigator collected socio personal data, clinical data and the knowledge was assessed by using the knowledge assessment questionnaire and the practice was assessed by using the reported practice rating scale from the caregivers of patients with homebased non-invasive ventilation. After the data collection multi-interventional programme was implemented to the subjects. After discharge the adherence was ensured through telephone to motivate the patients to follow the interventions that are taught. Posttest was taken out on the 14th day with the same tools. The obtained data was tabulated and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics.
Results: The collected data was analysed by using SPSS version 16 and description of participants based on socio-personal data and clinical data were analysed by using percentage and frequencies. Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to analyse the effectiveness of multi- interventional programme regarding homebased care on non-invasive ventilation among caregivers of patients with respiratory disorders. The result of the study revealed that multi-interventional programme helps to enhance the knowledge (p<0.01) and practice (p<0.01) among patients with respiratory disorders on non-invasive ventilation.
Conclusion: Multi-interventional programme programme is effective in increasing the knowledge and practice of the caregivers of the patients with respiratory disorders.
