AWS ELB and ALB: A Research-Based Study on Layer 7 Traffic Routing and Application Load Balancing

| Abstract | Elastic Load Balancing (ELB) is one of the core services in AWS that helps applications remain highly available and responsive by distributing incoming traffic across multiple compute resources. Among its different types, the Application Load Balancer (ALB) stands out for its ability to operate at Layer 7 of the OSI model. Unlike traditional load balancers that only forward packets based on IP and port, ALB understands the content of HTTP and HTTPS requests, which allows it to perform application-aware routing. In this paper, we explore the architecture, routing features, and operational benefits of ALB in AWS. We also discuss how it integrates with containers, serverless functions, and other AWS services to enable secure and scalable application delivery. A special focus is given to ALB target groups and the wide variety of backends they support (Amazon Web Services, 2023). |
