Akamai Global Traffic Manager: Intelligent Load Balancing and Resilient Traffic Routing

| Abstract | Akamai Global Traffic Manager (GTM) plays a critical role in modern multi-region and hybrid cloud architectures by intelligently managing and routing traffic across global endpoints. This paper examines the GTM's ability to load balance based on traffic ratios, geography, server health, and IP level intelligence. GTM is built to handle dynamic failover scenarios by rerouting traffic to alternate data centers or cloud regions, even across different providers. In addition to availability and performance benefits, Akamai GTM contributes to intrusion prevention by analyzing traffic headers and detecting abnormal patterns. Through practical analysis and architecture insights, this paper explores how GTM ensures resilience, speed, and security beyond traditional DNS-level load balancing. |
