Impact of Certificates in Multi-Plane Architectures

Author(s) Nikhita Kataria
Country United States
Abstract Certificates are an essential backbone securing interactions in multi-plane cloud environments across control plane, application plane, and data plane. They aim to provide mandatory authentication, authorization, confidentiality and overall trust guarantees. Any failures in certificate lifecycle management can lead to very quick cascading failures causing widespread outages even on minimal changes. In this paper we explore the role of certificates in multi-plane distributed architectures with key focus on control plane reliability, application access and data plane integrity. We cover case studies from industry outages and present controlled experiments highlighting fragility caused by certificate expirations, metadata misconfigurations or failures to renew access.
