Abstract Over half of individuals diagnosed with cancer experience pain of moderate to severe intensity, frequently manifesting at multiple sites and originating from diverse etiologies and underlying mechanisms. The heterogeneity of pain mechanisms is evident in the variable nature of cancer pain intensity and its clinical characteristics. Traditional classifications of pain within the cancer population involve distinguishing pain etiology, clinical characteristics related to both pain and the patient, pathophysiology, and the application of validated classification systems. Concepts such as breakthrough, nociceptive, neuropathic, and mixed pain are essential in the assessment of pain in this patient population. It is also crucial to be familiar with the characteristics of specific pain syndromes commonly encountered in patients with cancer pain. This article reviews current methods for classifying cancer pain, emphasizing the importance of accurate clinical evaluation in providing adequate analgesia to patients.
