Oral Traditions and Folk Literature: Voices of Sustainability Across Generations

Author(s) Ms. Divya S Nair
Country India
Abstract This paper looks at how oral traditions and folk literature carry wisdom about living sustainably and pass it down through generations. Traditions like proverbs, songs, myths, and rituals show how closely people have always lived with nature. Stories, ballads, and other forms of folk literature teach values such as conserving resources, caring for the community, and respecting the environment. By drawing examples from different cultures, the study shows how these traditions promote practices like water conservation, sustainable farming, protecting biodiversity, and living in balance with ecosystems. The paper argues that these are not just old customs but meaningful lessons that can help us face today’s environmental challenges. Bringing this traditional wisdom into modern life can guide us toward more sustainable and balanced ways of living.
