Relevance of Gurdjieff’s Educational Thought and Philosophy in the Present Indian Context

| Abstract | The twenty-first-century educational landscape is marked by unprecedented technological growth and equally profound human fragmentation. Formal education systems excel in measurable outcomes but often neglect the holistic growth of learners, leaving their emotional, ethical, and spiritual dimensions underdeveloped. This paper revisits the educational philosophy of George Ivanovich Gurdjieff to explore its enduring relevance in addressing this crisis of disconnection. Centred on the principles of conscious awareness, self-remembering, and the harmonisation of intellectual, emotional, and physical centers, Gurdjieff’s conception of human development offers a transformative framework for reimagining education. By situating his ideas within the Indian educational context—deeply informed by traditions of integral development articulated by thinkers such as Tagore, Vivekananda, and Aurobindo—the study demonstrates how Gurdjieff’s philosophy resonates with India’s cultural emphasis on balance between body, mind, and spirit. The paper argues that integrating these insights into modern Indian education can help counteract mechanised learning, attention fragmentation, and loss of meaning, fostering learners who are self-aware, ethically grounded, and holistically developed. |
