The Economics of Vertical Farming: A Sustainable Approach to Future Food Production

Author(s) Ms. Greeshma Rekha Raveendran
Country India
Abstract Vertical farming is a relatively new agricultural technique that involves growth of food crops in vertically piled layers. They are grown in stacked layers, instead of spreading out across large horizontal fields. The purpose of the paper is to examine the economics of vertical farming addressing both its evidenced benefits and limitations, while considering implications for food security, urbanization, and sustainable agriculture and discusses the costs and benefits associated with it, focusing on sustainable development. The research suggests ways that vertical farming can decrease land and water usage, slash transportation costs and support urban food markets. Meanwhile, it examines the economic concerns i.e high energy demand, capital cost and lack of crop diversity. From this examination the paper will conclude, whether or not vertical farming is feasible and scalable in addressing global food challenges economically.
