Abstract Hydrogels are three-dimensional hydrophilic polymer networks that can retain huge amounts of water, giving them a soft, tissue-like texture. Their biocompatibility, physicochemical properties, and capacity to respond to environmental stimuli make them extremely flexible in biomedical, pharmacological, and industrial applications. This article examines hydrogel classification according to source and crosslinking method, preparation procedures, and essential physical and chemical features. Hydrogel synthesis can be achieved by several processes, including chemical and physical procedures. Assessment characteristics include swelling behavior, solubility, pore size, rheology, and biocompatibility testing. Furthermore, a broad range of hydrogel applications, including medication administration (oral, ophthalmic, transdermal, and across the blood-brain barrier), wound healing, and tissue engineering, highlights their importance as next-generation smart biomaterials.
Keywords Hydrogel, mechanical, biocompatible, interpenetrating network, homopolymer, co-polymer, and swelling.
