Comparing the Effectiveness of the 5E and 7E Instructional Models in Middle Schools of Goa

Abstract This paper compares the effectiveness of the BSCS 5E instructional model and the expanded 7E model for middle-school science instruction. Drawing on foundational theory (constructivism and learning-cycle pedagogy), systematic reviews, and recent empirical studies, the review synthesises evidence on learning gains, retention, motivation, and transfer. It also outlines a pragmatic quasi-experimental design for directly comparing the two models in middle school settings and offers recommendations for practitioners and researchers. Key findings from the literature indicate that both learning-cycle models outperform traditional teacher-centred methods on conceptual understanding and motivation. In contrast, the 7E model—through added emphasis on elicitation and extension—shows promise for better activating prior knowledge and promoting transfer and retention in several studies. However, comparative evidence remains limited and context-dependent.
