Vocabulary Skills and Grammatical Competence Among Criminology Students

Abstract This study determined the level of vocabulary skills and grammatical competence among criminology students of Naga College Foundation, Inc. academic year 2023 to 2024. Further, it intended to determine the level of vocabulary skills and grammatical competence of the criminology students when grouped according to their demographic profile. Furthermore, it determined the significant relationship between the vocabulary skills and grammatical competence of the respondents. Descriptive – comparative and correlational method was used. Respondents were the 1st year to 4th year criminology students of Naga College Foundation, Incorporated. Questionnaire was the only data gathering tool used in this study.
Findings showed that the 3rd year criminology students had the highest level of vocabulary skills as compared to the other year levels. As to the level of grammatical competence, it revealed that the 4th year criminology students had higher level of grammatical competence along noun, pronoun, and preposition, while the 3rd year criminology students had higher level of grammatical competence along subject-verb agreement, adjectives and conjunction.
As to the level of vocabulary skills of the respondents when grouped according to their demographic profile, it showed that that females, graduates of private schools, and residing within Naga City had the higher level of vocabulary skills. As to the level of grammatical competence when grouped according to the respondents’ demographic profile, it revealed that in terms of sex, female respondents had higher level of grammatical competence among the given aspects. In terms of school last attended, graduates of private schools had higher level of grammatical competence along pronoun, subject-verb agreement, adjectives, preposition, and conjunction, while the graduates of public schools had higher level of grammatical competence in noun. In terms of residence, those who are residing within Naga City had higher level of grammatical competence along noun, subject-verb agreement, adjectives, and conjunctions, while respondents residing outside Naga City had higher level of grammatical competence along pronoun, and preposition.
Meanwhile, almost all of the correlations of the vocabulary skills to the grammatical competence of the respondents were found to be not significant, except to the 1st year respondents’ vocabulary skill and grammatical competence along preposition which was found to be significantly correlated.
It also revealed that as to the impact/effect of vocabulary skills to the grammatical competence, only the vocabulary skills of the first year respondents had low impact/effect on their grammatical competence along noun and subject-verb agreement. Meanwhile, the vocabulary skills of the first year respondents had moderate impact/effect on their grammatical competence along preposition. On the other hand, the vocabulary skills of the first year respondents had very low to no impact/effect on their grammatical competence along pronoun, adjectives, and conjunction. Further, the vocabulary skills of second, third, and fourth year respondents had very low to no impact/effect in all aspects of their grammatical competence.
