Abstract Abstract
Background: Sleep is a basic need for our health and well-being. It affects the way we think, feel, and move each day. Disrupted sleep routines like irregular schedules, late-night screen use, or poor bedtime habits can lead to musculoskeletal pain. Students are particularly at risk due to academic stress, sedentary habits, and their heavy use of digital devices. This makes it important to explore how sleep hygiene and musculoskeletal health are connected. Physiotherapy helps manage both issues through posture correction, ergonomics, exercise, and lifestyle changes.
Methods: To explore this connection, a structured literature review was conducted. Databases including PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, and Google Scholar were searched. Keywords used were sleep hygiene, musculoskeletal pain, students, and physiotherapy. Out of 178 reviewed, 20 were selected for detailed analysis and articles between 2000 and 2025 were selected.
Results: The review showed that poor sleep is common among students. It is often linked to pain in areas like the neck, shoulders, and back. The relationship seems to be two-way: poor sleep increases pain sensitivity, while pain makes it harder to sleep well. Physiotherapy plays an important role in this cycle. Strategies like sleep education, ergonomic advice, relaxation techniques, and structured exercise can help improve both sleep and pain. Preventive programs for students can reduce discomfort and improve overall well-being.
Conclusion: Poor sleep hygiene and musculoskeletal pain are closely connected in student populations. Physiotherapists address both issues by combining rehabilitation with sleep-focused strategies. Future research should explore how physiotherapy led sleep interventions can improve student health, recovery, and academic performance.
