Abstract The increasing demand for sustainable construction materials has driven the
development of innovative alternatives to traditional hardwoods and composite
materials. Engineered timber scrimber composites have emerged as a promising,
eco-friendly solution for flooring applications. This review explores the sustainable
production of engineered timber scrimber composites, discussing their
manufacturing processes, material properties, environmental impact, and potential
for use in flooring applications. Advances in enhancing their performance and
durability are highlighted, along with the challenges and opportunities for
commercialization. Engineered timber scrimber composites present a sustainable
alternative to traditional flooring materials, offering high strength, durability and
eco-friendliness. Scrimber composites, a type of engineered timber product, offer
enhanced mechanical properties and improved sustainability compared to
traditional solid timber. This study investigates the development of scrimber
composites for flooring applications using a combination of locally sourced,
plantation-grown timber species and a formaldehyde-free adhesive system. The
effects of various processing parameters, including fiber orientation, adhesive
formulation, and pressing conditions, on the physical and mechanical properties of
the scrimber composites were evaluated. The results shown that the optimized
scrimber composites exhibited superior strength, stiffness and dimensional
stability, meeting the requirements for flooring applications. A Life Cycle
Assessment (LCA) revealed significant environmental benefits associated with the
production of scrimber composites, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions
and fossil fuel consumption. This study production of engineered timber scrimber
composites as a viable alternative to traditional flooring materials. This review paper synthesizes existing research on scrimber composites, a sustainable building
material, to demonstrate its viability as a substitute for traditional flooring
materials. Through a comprehensive analysis of existing studies, I have compiled
the results of various tests, including physical and mechanical property
assessments, life cycle assessments (LCA), and environmental impact
evaluations. These tests have consistently shown that scrimber composites exhibit
improved density, bending strength, and internal bond strength. My review
concludes that scrimber composites offer a beneficial alternative to conventional
flooring materials.
