Reel Life vs Real Life: Impact of Short Video Platforms on Teen Identity and Mental Health

Abstract Abstract: Today’s teenagers spend a large part of their daily lives using short video platforms such as TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts. The content shared on these platforms usually shows only the attractive or edited moments of a person’s life, which is often very different from what happens in reality. Real life involves both good and bad experiences, but these are rarely visible online. This study focuses on how the gap between what teenagers see on screens and what they experience in real life affects their mental health and sense of self. Regular exposure to “perfect” online images can make young people feel less confident, anxious, or unhappy with their own lives. Some may even become confused about their true identity. At the same time, these platforms can give teenagers a chance to express themselves, be creative, and find supportive communities. The paper highlights both sides of short video use and stresses the importance of teaching digital awareness and emotional understanding. By learning to enjoy online content without comparing themselves, teenagers can build a healthier and more realistic mindset.
