| Abstract | This dissertation explores adjustments to classic algorithm designs sorting, searching, and neural networks tailored for low-power computing. The goal is energy efficiency and a smaller carbon footprint in large-scale systems. A key question is why sustainable development hasn't been a major focus in computer science, particularly regarding algorithm performance. The study reviews energy consumption data and algorithm performance data across various power conditions. The results aim to show opportunities for cutting energy use, ideally without sacrificing performance. Findings suggest that tweaked algorithms can potentially cut energy consumption by up to 30% without tanking performance; in most cases, this proves sustainable algorithm design is viable. The implications extend to healthcare, where high-performance computing is vital, but energy demands and the resulting carbon footprint can be excessive. As energy-efficient algorithms become more common, medicine can potentially maintain its computing power while lowering costs and helping meet global sustainability goals for reducing climate change. Generally speaking, this research adds to the growing field where computer science and sustainability meet, and it lays the groundwork for further exploration and new energy-efficient computing solutions in various industries; it offers, generally speaking, a more environmentally sound way to evolve technologies. |
