| Abstract | With the evolving landscape of post-secondary education and the workforce, artificial intelligence (AI) has increased its potential as a transformative tool in career guidance by providing personalized, data-driven recommendations. However, most AI systems focus on cognitive constructs (e.g., interests, abilities, previous educational achievements) while ignoring the emotional and psychological parts of career decision-making. We reviewed the constructs of career indecision, emotional intelligence, self-efficacy, chance events, and social context, as they are currently underrepresented in AI systems. Additionally, social media sites, such as Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and YouTube, have become important sources of career-related information and are increasingly influencing decision-making in ways that did not previously exist. This paper presents a set of recommendations to address limitations related to emotion by introducing hybrid human–AI approaches that integrate concepts of affective computing, multimodal data mining, and adaptive interventions. Hybrid models such as these have the potential to develop resilience and emotional well-being, as well as build a holistic career development process that is context-sensitive and that transcends cognitive matching. |
