An Analytical Perspective of Women’s Political Participation in India

Author(s) Prof. Bhawana Jharta, Mr. Prakash Chand
Country India
Abstract Women’s participation in politics is essential for building a dynamic and inclusive democracy. This involvement is not merely a matter of gender equity but a cornerstone for effective democratic governance, social justice and sustainable development. The Constitution of India enshrines the principle of gender equality and guarantees women equal legal rights with men to participate in political affairs and assume public office. Yet the gap between constitutional provisions and women’s actual participation remains a critical issue in India’s democratic framework. This paper provides an in-depth analysis of women’s political participation in India, tracing their participation in voting and their representation from the Constituent Assembly to Parliament, State Legislatures and local self-governments. It compares India’s performance with that of other countries, examines key barriers to women’s political participation and proposes strategic measures to enhance their involvement and representation in political processes. The analysis draws on secondary sources- including books, scholarly journals, magazines, online resources and government documents- and employs a historical, analytical, and descriptive approach.
