Relevance and Significance of Vedic Education in Relation to NEP 2020

| Abstract | The Vedic system of education, rooted in the ancient Indian knowledge tradition, emphasized holistic development, integration of moral and spiritual values, self-discipline, and pursuit of truth. Unlike modern education that often prioritizes technical knowledge and employability, the Vedic system aimed at nurturing the physical, intellectual, social, and spiritual aspects of human life. With the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, there is a renewed focus on holistic, multidisciplinary, value-based, and experiential learning. This research paper examines the relevance and significance of Vedic education in the context of NEP 2020, exploring how its philosophical ideals, teaching methods, and ethical framework can contribute to shaping the modern education system in India. Using qualitative and analytical methodology, the study integrates classical sources, modern scholarly interpretations, and contemporary educational policy discourse. The analysis reveals that Vedic education, with its emphasis on harmony between knowledge and values, continues to provide a timeless framework for nation-building, ethical awareness, and global citizenship in the 21st century. Vedic education, one of the oldest systems of learning in India, emphasized holistic development by integrating intellectual, spiritual, physical, and moral growth. Rooted in values such as truth, discipline, respect for nature, and self-realization, it prepared individuals not only for livelihood but also for a purposeful life. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 resonates strongly with these principles by advocating for competency-based, value-oriented, and multidisciplinary learning. |
