Parenting Styles and Their Impact on Children’s Learning Behavior

Author(s) PRIYAMBADA GHOSH
Country India
Abstract Parenting styles significantly shape children's learning behavior, academic motivation, and classroom engagement. This paper examines the effects of major parenting styles—authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and neglectful—on learning behaviors such as self-regulation, intrinsic motivation, persistence, and attention. Drawing on Baumrind’s typology and recent empirical studies, the paper finds that authoritative parenting consistently fosters positive academic outcomes, while authoritarian, permissive, and neglectful styles show mixed or negative impacts depending on cultural and socioeconomic contexts. Parental self-efficacy and involvement mediate these effects. Evidence-based recommendations are provided for parents, teachers, and policymakers to enhance children’s academic engagement and learning resilience.
