Decolonizing the Transcultural: Ecological Memory and Belonging in Select Poems of Judith Wright

Abstract This paper explores how Judith Wright’s poetry reimagines belonging and identity through a decolonizing lens, focusing on three of her works such as “Magpies”, “The Cycads”, and “Rainforest. Moving beyond the environmental readings that dominate Wright’s criticism, this study argues that her poems engage deeply with questions of cultural displacement, ecological recovery, and spiritual reconciliation. Drawing on ideas from postcolonial and decolonial theory, as well as transcultural studies, the paper examines how Wright’s language and imagery resist colonial hierarchies of thought and restore a sense of relational balance between humans, nature, and time.In “Magpies”, the speaker’s movement from loss to renewal echoes the journey of a people learning to reclaim what was taken. “The Cycads” transforms endurance into a living metaphor for survival beyond colonial time, while “Rainforest” dissolves the boundaries between self and environment, envisioning unity instead of dominance. Through these poems, Wright proposes a transcultural way of seeing, one that honours Indigenous wisdom and ecological continuity. The paper thus repositions Wright as a poet whose work quietly but powerfully participates in the decolonizing of Australian consciousness.
