| Abstract | Natural sources of conventional fuels (gasoline and diesel) are declining steadily due to industrialization and motorization of the world. Hence it has become necessary to go for alternative energy sources that can be used as substitute of fossil fuels. Being eco-friendly, non-toxic, vegetable oils and waste oil is a good viable alternative to obtain biodiesel. So waste oil and its use for production of biodiesel have been focused. The experimental work involves the production of biodiesel using waste oil. Ethanol and methanol are used as alcohols. Sodium and potassium hydroxides are selected as catalyst. Transesterification yields biodiesel and glycerol. Obtained biodiesel was extracted and tested to study its properties. Finally, the properties like density, specific gravity, flash point, fire point, viscosity, aniline point, pour point, cloud point and diesel index of the prepared bio diesel samples were analyzed. After performing the tests and obtaining the results, the properties of biodiesel were compared with those of conventional diesel obtained from petroleum. It was found that the properties of the prepared bio diesel were somewhat similar to the conventional diesel and hence they provide a scope to be used as an alternate source of energy which can replace conventional fossil fuels. |
