| Abstract | This paper explores the notion of educational consciousness in two distinct community settings of the Darjeeling hills: tea garden communities and busties (non-tea garden) communities. Drawing on household surveys and case studies, the study compares how different socioeconomic conditions, access to educational facilities, and community attitudes shape perceptions and aspirations regarding education. Key indicators such as school accessibility, dropout patterns, reliance on private versus government institutions, and parental involvement were analyzed. The findings indicate that the busty community, with comparatively better access to resources and infrastructure, displays a higher level of educational awareness and investment in schooling. In contrast, tea garden communities face persistent challenges – including economic vulnerability, poor institutional support, and limited exposure – that restrict educational consciousness and attainment. The study concludes that fostering educational awareness, alongside improving infrastructure and policy support, recruitment of more qualified and trained teachers, and community awareness programs, is essential to reducing disparities and ensuring inclusive development across these communities. |
