PAÑÑĀ AND SĪLA–SAMĀDHI INTEGRATION: A FUNCTIONAL TRIAD IN KEY SUTTAS

Abstract This paper contends that sīla (ethical discipline), samādhi (collectedness), and paññā (knowledge) in early Buddhist scriptures function not as a linear progression but as an interdependent system that evolves through repeated cycles. This study conducts close readings of key suttas MN 117 (Mahācattārīsaka), MN 44 (Cūḷavedalla), selections from SN 45 (Maggasaṃyutta), and AN 3 (Tika Nipāta), along with the narrative arc of DN 2 (Sāmaññaphala) to demonstrate how ethical integrity alleviates remorse and stabilizes attention; how collectedness enhances perception, facilitating yathābhūta-ñāṇadassana; and how emerging insight refines both conduct and concentration, advancing them in the subsequent phase of training. Doctrinal synthesis emphasizes inter-component cross-referencing (e.g., right view influencing proper focus). It introduces a "triadic spiral" model, wherein each element serves as both a requirement and an outcome of the others across time. The findings contest pedagogical approaches that isolate procedures or favor a singular factor, advocating for curricula that facilitate training while promoting micro-cycles of feedback among sīla, samādhi, and paññā. The outcome is a pragmatic account of the trajectory that is textually substantiated, practically implementable, and attuned to the dynamic of early Buddhist soteriology.
