Abstract India is recognized to be one of the oldest civilizations in the world. India was a centre for higher learning in ancient times. India made significant contributions to astronomy, ayurveda astrology mathematics, and other sciences. In Indian society, education has been extremely important since the Vedic era. Vedic science was so sophisticated that it could be contrasted with modern scientific discoveries. In ancient India the primary educational institutions were Ashrams, Gurukuls, and Ghatikas. India was home to numerous successful universities and used to attract students from all over the world. Among all most important were Nalanda University (427CE AD -1400CE), the world's first University and Takahashila University (600BC-500BC)
