A Study of Artificial Intelligence and Human Eyewitness Testimony with Effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Author(s) Ms. Deeksha Chhabra
Country India
Abstract Eyewitness testimonies serve as crucial evidence in legal proceedings, shaping juagments and influencing outcomes. However, the reliability and accuracy of such testimonies are often subject to scrutiny, especially when considering factors such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the emergence of artificial intelligence (Al) technologies in forensic investigations. This comparative study aims to unravel the disparities between Al-generated and human eyewitness testimonies, exploring how PTSD affects the reliability of both.
Drawing upon interdisciplinary research from psychology, criminology, and artificial intelligence, this study employs a mixed-methods approach. Firstly, it examines the neurobiological and psychological mechanisms underlying PTSD and its impact on memory consolidation, retrieval, and accuracy of eyewitness testimonies. Secondly, it scrutinizes the development and deployment of Al
technologies, such as deep learning algorithms, in recreating and analysing eyewitness accounts.
Through a comparative analysis of Al-generated and human eyewitness testimonies, this study elucidates the strengths and limitations of each approach.
It investigates the fidelity of Al-generated reconstructions in capturing subtle nuances and inconsistencies within eyewitness testimonies, contrasting them with the empathetic and context-sensitive nature of human testimonies.
Furthermore, it delves into the ethical implications and societal perceptions
surrounding the integration of Al in legal proceedings, particularly concerning issues of bias, transparency, and accountability.
The findings of this study contribute to both theoretical understanding and practical application within the fields of forensic psychology, criminology, and artificial intelligence. By elucidating the interplay between PTSD, human cognition, and Al technologies in eyewitness testimonies, it provides insights for policymakers, legal practitioners, and forensic experts to enhance the reliability and faimess of judicial processes. Ultimately, this research endeavours to bridge the gap between human and artificial intelligence in forensic investigations while addressing the complex challenges posed by PTSD in the pursuit of justice.
