The Psychology of Gurmat Sangeet: Harmonising Mind, Spirit and Healing through Music Therapy

| Abstract | Gurmat Sangeet, the Sikh tradition of raga-based Shabad Kirtan anchored in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS), offers a unique pathway to psychological well-being and psychosocial healing. This paper develops an India-centered analytical account of how Gurmat Sangeet can support attention, affect regulation, meaning-making, social connection and spiritual resilience. It integrates four strands: a) Indian musicological foundations of Gurmat Sangeet, including the 31 ragas and ghar indications in the SGGS; b) psychological mechanisms tied to rhythm, melody, language and embodied practice; c) Indian streams of music therapy such as Raga Chikitsa and Nada Yoga; and d) practice models in gurdwaras, schools, hospitals and community mental health. Using a narrative synthesis, the paper connects current scholarship in Sikh musicology with Indian work in music therapy (e.g. T. V. Sairam) and emerging clinical studies on kirtan-based practices. It proposes an Indian framework for “Gurmat Music Therapy” (GMT) with six core processes: sonic attention, breath–voice regulation, linguistic contemplation of shabad, raga–rasa alignment, sangat (community) bonding and ethical-spiritual orientation. The paper outlines program designs, equity concerns, assessment strategies and research directions suitable for Indian contexts. It argues that Gurmat Sangeet can harmonise mind and spirit while offering a culturally rooted, low-cost and scalable adjunct to health and education services in India. |
