Beyond the Classroom: Mathematics in Ancient Civilizations

Author(s) Mr. Sudipta Mahata
Country India
Abstract Mathematics, often perceived as a modern classroom subject, has deep roots in the civilizations of the ancient world. This paper explores the practical and theoretical applications of mathematics in various ancient societies, including Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, and Greece. It examines how early humans used arithmetic, geometry, algebra, and astronomy for purposes beyond formal education—ranging from trade, architecture, and engineering to calendar creation and astronomical observations. By analyzing historical records, artifacts, and scholarly interpretations, this study highlights the sophistication of ancient mathematical thought and its influence on modern mathematics. The research emphasizes the importance of recognizing mathematics as an integral part of cultural heritage and societal development.
