The Role of Millets in Addressing Micronutrient Deficiency in India: An Integrative Review

| Abstract | This integrative review examines the potential contribution of millets to reducing micronutrient deficiencies in India, with a focus on iron, zinc, calcium, and selected B-vitamins. Drawing on peer-reviewed studies, randomized trials, processing and bioavailability research, and policy documents published between 2015 and 2025, the review synthesizes evidence on the nutrient composition of major millets, the effects of traditional and modern processing on nutrient retention and bioaccessibility, and the impact of millet-based interventions on biomarkers of micronutrient status. Findings indicate that millets—particularly finger (ragi), pearl (bajra), and foxtail millet—are nutrient-dense compared with common staples, and that biofortified varieties and optimized processing can substantially improve iron and zinc bioavailability. Implementation challenges include antinutrients (phytates), consumer acceptability, supply-chain constraints, and the need for cross-sector policy action. The review concludes with research and policy recommendations to strengthen the role of millets within India’s nutrition-security agenda. |
