Asset Creation through Collective Empowerment: A Study on the Impact of SHGs among Weaker Sections

Author(s) Dr. Janssen Joseph
Country India
Abstract Self Help Groups (SHGs) have emerged as one of the most transformative community-based initiatives in India, particularly for women and marginalized populations. This study analyses the impact of SHG participation on asset creation among weaker sections of society. Using empirical primary data and applying the Z-test for proportion, the study compares ownership of various assets before and after SHG involvement. The findings reveal statistically significant improvement in the ownership of housing, financial savings, insurance, household appliances, and livestock, demonstrating that SHGs substantially contribute to financial inclusion and economic stability. The research concludes that SHGs serve as a crucial vehicle for collective empowerment, social upliftment, and sustainable development.
