| Abstract | Cancer therapy has significantly improved survival rates; however, its therapeutic success is often offset by a spectrum of adverse effects that extend beyond systemic toxicity. The oral cavity remains one of the most susceptible regions, where complications emerge due to the direct cytotoxic impact of chemotherapy and secondary effects such as immunosuppression and microbial dysbiosis. Clinical manifestations, including mucositis, xerostomia, dysgeusia, periodontal breakdown, neuropathies, infections, and dental developmental anomalies, can severely affect nutrition, speech, and psychosocial well-being. Moreover, these conditions frequently interrupt treatment schedules and elevate the risk of systemic infections, thereby compromising overall cancer care. This narrative review comprehensively discusses the prevalence, pathophysiology and management of chemotherapy-induced oral complications. It further highlights how timely identification and management strategies can reduce the severity and duration of these complications. Overall, the review emphasises that integrating dental professionals into multidisciplinary oncology teams is essential to enhance treatment tolerance, improve quality of life and ensure holistic cancer survivorship. |
