Ethnomathematical Pedagogy for Peacebuilding: A Holistic Approach to Education

Author(s) TBC Lalramnghaka, Dr. Prateek Chaurasia, Prof. Lokanath Mishra
Country India
Abstract Ethnomathematics examines the relationship between culture and mathematical knowledge, highlighting the diverse ways different societies perceive and apply mathematical concepts. This method challenges the idea that mathematics is universal and culture-free by including mathematical techniques from many cultures, creating inclusivity, cultural awareness, and identity. Ethnomathematics in peace education improves empathy, intercultural understanding, and conflict resolution, preparing students to handle social and cultural differences. Culturally responsive education, collaborative learning, critical analysis, and project-based learning help students apply maths to real-world situations and encourage collaboration. Ethnomathematic pedagogy encourages social unity, critical thinking, and ethical reasoning in schools by recognising indigenous and marginalised cultures' mathematical skills. This approach promotes fairness, peace, and holistic development through education.
