Abstract This study explored the lived experiences, psychological impacts, and aspirations of Philippine National Police Special Action Force (PNP SAF) troopers before and after combat operations. As members of the elite unit of the PNP that is frequently exposed to life-threatening missions, these troopers face unique challenges that extend beyond the battlefield. Guided by Moustakas’ phenomenological approach, this qualitative research focused on SAF troopers who met three criteria: (1) they had experienced armed encounters, (2) sustained injuries in the line of duty (Wounded In Police Operation or WIPO), and (3) witnessed the death of a teammate. In-depth interviews were conducted to gather rich, first-hand narratives that capture the complexity of their experiences. Analysis of the data revealed eight emergent themes. Three themes reflected their emotional and psychological experiences during and after combat, such as fear, vulnerability, and resilience. Another three themes addressed the long-term impact of these experiences on their mental health, relationships, and personal growth. One theme highlighted the coping mechanisms and support systems, such as peer solidarity and family connection, that SAF troopers relied on to manage trauma and stress. Finally, one theme captured their perspective on transitioning from active combat roles to broader life responsibilities, demonstrating how their SAF identity shaped their values and aspirations beyond service. Findings from this study provide valuable insights for developing a responsive reintegration and resilience framework to better address the needs of SAF personnel.
