"Fashion vs Focus: Exploring the Role of college Attire on Mental Health”

Author(s) Shilpi Sharma, Dr. Kiran panwar

Abstract The present study examines how different types of college attire, such as formal uniforms, semi-formal dress codes, and casual clothing, influence students’ mental well-being and academic focus. Clothing plays a significant role in shaping a college student’s self-perception, confidence, and sense of belonging within the academic environment. This research aims to understand whether structured dress codes help reduce social comparison and anxiety or if casual dress encourages individuality and comfort. A mixed-method approach will be used, involving both questionnaires and interviews with students from colleges with formal/semi-formal dress policies and those with fully casual dress norms. The study seeks to identify the emotional and cognitive effects of college attire on students’ focus, self-esteem, and overall psychological health. Findings may provide insights for educators and administrators to design dress guidelines that promote equality, comfort, and positive mental health among college students.
