Abstract In academia, a PhD is considered a top-notch degree, intended for highly capable students, awarded upon completion of a valid research study. But the responsibility, combined with the socio-economic dynamics, brings along a lot of challenges, affecting the students mentally and physically. The researcher, therefore, intended to study the state of wellbeing of the PhD students through a comparison of their demographic details, namely, Gender (i.e. male or female), Marital Status (i.e. married or unmarried), Category (i.e. non-reserved or reserved), Type of Scholar (i.e. full-time or in-service), Research Experience (i.e. scholars with any prior practical research experience or totally inexperienced), and Type of Subject (i.e. lab-based or non-lab-based subject), to understand the effect of such demographic variations on wellbeing of the students. It is a descriptive survey research study based on 493 PhD students from 19 different public universities of West Bengal, India. A researcher made wellbeing scale was used to collect data through an online platform, applying non-probability sampling techniques, and it was later analysed using non-parametric statistics. The results showed a significant difference in wellbeing scores across gender (p = 0.015 < 0.05) and subject of study (p = 0.002 < 0.05). No significant difference was found in the wellbeing scores across marital status (p = 0.062 > 0.05), category (p = 0.717 > 0.05), type of scholar (p = 0.376 > 0.05) and research experience (p = 0.327 > 0.05). A dimension-wise comparison was also done in cases where the results showed a significant difference. This study aims to create a base for insightful research revolving around the PhD students on a broader scale.
