Financial Impact of Supply Chain Disruptions and the Cost-Benefit of Resilience Strategies

Author(s) Ms. Svastika Pandey

Abstract In an increasingly globalized and uncertain business environment, supply chain disruptions have emerged as critical threats to organizational performance and financial stability. This paper examines the financial impact of supply chain disruptions and evaluates the cost-benefit of resilience strategies adopted by firms across sectors such as manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, retail, and logistics. Drawing on academic research, industry reports, and real-world case studies including insights from the Indian context—the paper identifies the direct and indirect financial consequences of disruptions, including revenue loss, increased operational costs, reputational damage, and market share erosion. It explores key resilience strategies such as supplier diversification, digitalization, inventory buffering, nearshoring, and collaborative risk management, analyzing both their costs and effectiveness in mitigating disruption-related risks. The study highlights the complex trade-offs firms face between operational efficiency and resilience, particularly in emerging markets like India, where infrastructure and policy support play significant roles. Ultimately, the research underscores that while resilience strategies involve upfront costs, their long-term benefits in terms of risk reduction, faster recovery, and competitive advantage often outweigh these investments especially in an era defined by volatility, geopolitical tensions, and climate risks.
