Noise Pollution in Urban Playgrounds: Stress and Recovery in Athletes

Author(s) Gurbir Singh
Country India
Abstract Urbanization has intensified environmental stressors such as noise pollution, particularly in urban playgrounds and sports facilities. Elevated noise levels from traffic, construction, and public activity disrupt athletes’ stress regulation, recovery, and performance, as reflected in markers like heart rate variability, cortisol, and concentration. This paper examines these effects while exploring yogic practices from the Indian Knowledge System—pranayama, meditation, and pratyahara—as resilience-building strategies. Findings indicate that noise exposure elevates stress and impairs recovery, whereas athletes practicing mindfulness and yogic techniques show improved coping, faster recovery, and emotional stability. The study also emphasizes sustainable urban planning—natural sound barriers, eco-acoustic playgrounds, and community noise regulations—as critical interventions. By blending scientific evidence with indigenous wisdom, the paper proposes a holistic framework for promoting athlete well-being and sustainable sports development.
