Abstract Rugoscopy, or the study of palatal rugae patterns, has emerged as a valuable and reliable tool in forensic human identification. The uniqueness, individuality, and post-mortem stability of rugae make them comparable to fingerprints and dental records. These anatomical folds on the anterior part of the palate are resistant to trauma, chemical attack, and decomposition. This review explores the developmental basis, classification, and forensic relevance of rugoscopy, with an emphasis on current recording techniques, digital applications, and its potential integration with artificial intelligence in forensic odontology. Although rugae analysis is yet to be accepted as primary identification evidence, its adjunctive role in mass disasters, decomposed remains, and edentulous cases makes it an indispensable part of modern forensic practice.
