Trust, Participation, and Governance in Africa: Evidence from Afrobarometer Round 10.

Author(s) Mr. Ali Dangaabo Mohammed, Mr. Joshua Chonga
Country Ghana
Abstract This study utilizes data from Afrobarometer Round 10 (2024) report to carry out a comparative analysis using three key indicators namely public trust, perceptions of transparency and citizen engagement in Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya. Varied governance profiles were discovered. Ghana exhibits a relatively high institutional trust and lower corruption perception, attained from its historical democratic stability in the fourth republic. Nigeria portrays crisis of legitimacy characterized by low trust and high perceived corruption. Kenya revealed a mixed experience where devolution has enhanced high level of local participation with modest trust influenced by persistent corruption. The analysis advances that transparency and participation alone are not sufficient to build trust. Trust and public confidence are contingent on credible enforcement, and elite accountability. The study concludes that strengthening these linkages is crucial for deepening democracy in Africa.
