The Famished Road: A Narrative of Magic and Realism

| Abstract | The Famished Road is often used as an illustration of the genre known as African magical realism. An urban slum in Nigeria serves as the setting for the events in the novel. In this particular setting, Okri tells the story of a spirit child or abiku named Azaro set against the backdrop of life in postcolonial Africa, marked by a lack of wealth, dishonest politics, and widespread environmental devastation. According to African tradition, Azaro, the main character, is a spirit child or abiku living in the limbo between life and death. This limbo is where he spends his time. In this article, we will analyze both the magical and realistic aspects of the novel The Famished Road. The story paints a picture of a society where both the living and the dead live peacefully. According to Okri, in the land of new beginnings, spirits had conversations with infants who had yet to be born. |
