Abstract Background and Objective: Enteral feeding is the practice of feeding patients in hospital with various clinical conditions. Enteral feeding is carried out by inserting a tube through the nose into the stomach through the esophagus. Tub feeding through enteral access tubes is very common in the healthcare and home care setting. However, most of the world relies, for various reasons, on blended food prepared in home kitchens or in hospital kitchens. We will explain in detail the benefits, risks, complications, advantages and disadvantages of the use of blended and scientific formula feeding and make recommendations after presenting evidence in this respect. The main objective of the study is to check the effectiveness of enteral feeding in hospital patients and to investigate whether enteral feeding can deliver the required patient nutrient content.
Methods: A nine-month hospital study was conducted (from 14 February 2022 to 14 November 2022) in which 150 subjects, both male and female, were selected to receive enteral feeding. Out of 150 subjects, 90 subjects are on scientific formula feeds and 60 subjects are on blenderized kitchen feeds. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to obtain anthropometric data. For the collection of biochemical and clinical data, a Problem Oriented Medical Record (POMR) file was used. The BMI was calculated before and after feeding and compared to control the efficacy of the patient.
Results: In the current study scientific formula feeds were used more frequently than kitchen feeds. The scientific formula enteral feed was effective for 75% of subjects in meeting the nutrient requirement of subjects. The length of stay in the intensive care unit and hospital was better among patients on scientific formula feeds compared to kitchen feeds.
Conclusions: Scientific formula feeding provides adequate nutrition in terms of micro and macronutrients while being cost-effective and less labor-intensive.
Keywords Critically ill patients, enteral feeding, nasogastric feeding.
