Accessibility Of higher Education Across Space And Social Strata In India: State Level Study

Abstract Higher education is essential for human development of any county. Due to various socio-economic and political reason some section of society and region remain backward in accessing higher education. Accessibility in education refers The ability of people to have opportunity in education, regardless of gender, race, caste, physical disability and space. Paper is will analyze accessibility of various social strata which includes women, SC ST.This paper also analyse accessibility of higher education ACROSS state through various accessibility indicator like Gross enrollment ratio of various disadvantage group, student-teacher ratio, Number of universities across state etc. While analyzing pattern it was found that southern states have higher levels of accessibility of higher education. The Hindi heartland regions and north eastern states of India have the lowest levels of the accessibility in higher education. The States with higher levels accessibility of higher education are having good performance in many of the indicators taken for the study. Noticeable things is that norther hilly state like Himachal Pradesh Jammu Kashmir have performed much better even being constrain in resources and revenue than other Hindi heartland states. Similar pattern also visible in social groups where disadvantaged group found lacking in accessibility in higher education. Furthermore this paper try to unfold reason behind that inaccessibility and suggest to Bridge the gap.
