| Abstract | Financial inclusion has emerged as a critical tool for ensuring equitable and sustainable development, particularly among marginalized and vulnerable communities. This paper delves into the initiatives undertaken to promote financial inclusion among tribal populations in Kerala, with a primary emphasis on the role and performance of public sector banks. Kerala, despite its strong record in social development, continues to face challenges in integrating tribal communities—many of whom live in geographically isolated and economically disadvantaged areas—into the formal financial system. The study analyzes how effectively public sector banks have implemented tribal financing schemes, assessed their penetration across various districts, and evaluated their contribution to improving the socio-economic well-being of tribal households. It looks into the impact of national and state-level programs, including direct benefit transfers, microcredit facilities, and digital banking initiatives, on tribal livelihoods. Moreover, the research highlights existing barriers such as low awareness levels, limited access to technology, language and literacy constraints, and socio-cultural apprehensions that restrict tribal engagement with formal financial services. By combining empirical data and field-based insights, the paper offers recommendations for strengthening financial inclusion strategies. It argues that achieving meaningful inclusion requires more than just opening bank accounts—it demands continuous engagement through community-based financial education, culturally sensitive outreach programs, and technology solutions tailored to rural tribal contexts. Ultimately, the paper seeks to provide a framework for sustainable economic empowerment of tribal communities through stronger financial networks and inclusive development planning. |
