Politics Beyond Borders: Reimagining Health as Human Security in the 21st Century

Abstract Abstract
In the 21st century, global health has evolved into a critical pillar of human security, marking a paradigm shift from traditional state-centric to human-centric understandings of safety and stability. Health is no longer merely a biomedical concern but a multidimensional element of global peace, economic development, and societal resilience. The human security framework, emphasizing protection from threats to lives, livelihoods, and dignity, reconceptualizes health as both a fundamental human right and a diplomatic necessity. The COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and geopolitical conflicts have shown that health insecurities transcend borders, destabilize nations, and strain governance structures. This paper examines the conceptual and policy significance of health as human security, drawing on UN and WHO frameworks and scholarly literature. It argues for integrated approaches that unite public health, human rights, and international cooperation to build resilient societies in a globalized era.
